The recreation centre of Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu, located in the Montérégie region underwent a 627-m2 expansion, thereby endowing the municipality with a facility according with the image of its citizens’ dynamism.
In a first for Quebec, the use of glulam wood decking as an exposed interior wall structure proved to be an ideal solution for a gymnasium on account of its high resistance to impacts.
Combined with a main post-and-beam structure (also made of black spruce glulam timber), the wall framing stands out on account of its aesthetic and acoustic qualities as well as its resistance to fire. The use of wood also brought unity to the centre’s three entrances in the form of wood siding and a series of pergola-like glulam structures, all of which create a link between the building’s inside and outside.
The cost of wood products, including installation, was approximately $390,000, out of a total budget of $1.5 million.
