This new building of the Université du Québec en Outaouais is home to a research centre on temperate forests that has garnered recognition not only for its expertise in the field of forestry but also for having positioned the region as a leader in the production and processing of wood. The two-storey, 890-m2 addition capitalizes on the adjoining century-old building, thus reducing the footprint.

The exterior siding consists of custom-made vertical laths and a typical horizontal covering, both of which were produced using eastern white cedar. The end result has been to endow the building shell with a particularly well-balanced façade. Installation of the exterior siding involved using panels, which itself represented an innovative, quick and effective solution. It also enhanced the solidity of the wood elements and made it possible to conceal the connectors.

The building explores the use of various wood species – and particularly those of the temperate deciduous forest – e.g., interior wall siding in logs and Russian birch plywood; wood screen and interior ceiling in yellow birch laths; maple floor; and oak stairs.

The value of the light frame is $100,000 $, while that of the other wood uses is about $265,000.
