Expanding GESTION 3 DANS 1’s Quebec City headquarters involved adding a light-frame storey, which was supported by a glulam surrounding structure. It proved to be an excellent way of doubling the surface area of this small, 240 m2 commercial building in the continuance of its current use.

The new architectural volume is borne up by a series of wood columns forming a V, according to a stand-alone approach. As a whole, the building consists in two stacked volumes arranged to create both a canopy over the main entrance and an upper-storey deck, which serves as a bridge between the executive office and the dining room. The floor trusses and roof trusses of the existing portion, as well as the wood platform frame walls of the upper storey, were all selected with a view to reusing the same materials.

On account of its lightness, wood was a material of choice for building the structure selected for this type of addition, in keeping with the concern with optimizing the reuse of the existing built heritage and limiting its footprint.

The total cost of the project was $525,000.
